Performances - final version

TRACE - 20th April

Glitter & Brush - one traces the journey from Arts Centre to NewRED, the other goes along with a brush to erase the line, the process could be repeated several times.

COMMUNICATION - 27th April

Megaphone & Dictaphone - one performer has the dictaphone, the other the megaphone with a predetermined script. Speaking through the megaphone and with the dictaphone recording the performers walk towards each other to record the conversation. The dictaphone and megaphone are then taken to the opposite sites.

DOCUMENTATION - 4th May

Camera & Money - disposable cameras at one site and the exact money to get it developed at the other. One travels to the opposite site photographing the journey, collects the money, pays to get it developed, puts the receipt in one location and the photos in the other.

UNITY BARRIER - 11th May (24hr Event)

T-Shirts & Safety Pins - two piles of t-shirts and safety pins at both sites, both performers start at different sites and walking around the city they invite the public to join in and become part of the sculpture/performance. People take a t-shirt, put it on and the t-shirts get pinned together eventually the two parts come together to form a whole.

TENSION - 18th May

Balloon & Scissors/Pin - balloon at one site, collected by one performer, inflated and taken to a meeting point. The other performer meets the one with the ballon and bursts it, I think the performer with the balloon should be stood still waiting for the other to arrive in a public place for a while before the other appears. The remains are collected and taken to the opposite site, the pin/scissors are taken to the opposite site.

Performances for CoExist 2.

Dates confirmed: Sat 20th, 27th April & Sat 4th, 11th & 18th May
24 hour project could be an interactive performance with the people who get involved? I will run this idea by the NewREd gang; but before I do this we will need to consider how that might be realised, as I don’t really want to go to them with the suggestion of this but no idea of how, what and why etc.

I think we should have the five objects and utilize the five objects into performances. The reason I don’t want to display more to create the sense of ambiguity we spoke at the beginning of our i9deas is that I feel the work as a whole is complex and rich enough. I feel we may struggle to find a language that is understandable and coherent enough to be understood by the public at large but also maintaining our true artistic intentions. I feel the fiction/non-fiction idea is a brief in itself and I would like to dedicate real time to that and that alone.
My feeling is we should concentrate on what the work as a whole means to the adjoining spaces and how each performance illustrates those intentions. This is not to say we prescribe a forgone conclusion to the work and therefore risk building an artificial ending, but what this will do is make us further consider what is and what is not important, so as to create a work visually and theoretically clean and well considered.

There are a lot of complex elements to this work that we ourselves don’t fully understand, which is exciting, but I am a where of the context that we will be realising the work which is equally important. We can’t ram all of our ideas into one work. After the work is over we can sit down and pull the work apart to find out what was successful and what was not etc. to gain insight and experience to better realise our complex ideas into the physical. My feeling is this will only happen if we are to simplify and edit the amount we are asking form this one work.
Little and often is the way forward, as we both know the only trait we both share is to over analysis to the point where the idea can only remain in a sketch of a body of text as we are not yet experienced enough to deal with the form or the idea.

So we have a rough idea of the performance, now what we need to do is think about each of the objects and what we are asking them to do in order to edit down and further figure out what five objects can make a whole.

Performances for CoExist

I think that it makes sense that the performances take place on saturdays whilst the show is open at NewRED, I don't tend to work during the day on saturdays so I can commit to doing this each week, would this be okay for you too?

The dates would be;

Sat 20th, 27th April & Sat 4th, 11th & 18th May

11th May would coincide with the 24hr event you mentioned so I don't know if we want to do something specifically for this or not.

We have five performances that we need to prepare for. My personal feeling is that it would be interesting to have more than five objects displayed at the Arts Centre as it adds to the sense of potential/ambiguity that we want, if all of the objects are going to be used at some point it looses this a bit. I also think we have enough objects to achieve this.

Performances (not in any particular order)

  1. Glitter trace - marking the route between the two sites by walking with a container of glitter. Do we both start with one each at separate sites and take different routes? Or does one of us start at the Art Centre whilst the other waits at NewRED to receive the container and take it back to the Arts Centre?
  2. Shrink-wrap - finding various sites around the city we create barriers for the other to perform within. We could walk up and down the space produced between the two objects, push against the material or as soon as one barrier is installed by one of us the other takes it down, repeating the process for a set period.
  3. Balloons - Starting at the two different sites we walk towards an agreed point to meet each other, we burst the others balloon and take the remains to either the site we came from or the one we didn't.
  4. Megaphone - we script something for each other. One of us collects the megaphone from the Arts Centre, walking from there to NewRED this script is read out. Handing over the megaphone to the one at NewRED this process is repeated on the walk back to the Arts Centre.
  5. Fabric - (this could be done for the 24hr event) the fabric has a series of holes in for people to fit their heads in. One of us picks it up from the Arts Centre and collects people with it along the way to NewRED, meets the other at NewRED and repeats the process. During the journey between the sites conversation between the artist and the public taking part can be facilitated and directed.

We could do all of these different performances or we could just do one and repeat it each week. Let me know what you think!
