Lydia's response to Elise's musings

The idea of an alternative institute that only women are permitted entry to is an interesting one. In this regard the idea of only allowing certain people to enter makes me think of a work by Mark Gubb where he physically divides an exhibition space and separates viewers based on height. There are countless other examples that explore these ideas i'm sure. Here we can discuss arts function as an elitist endeavour and challenge notions that it is open to all as an institute like Tate would propose, we both know that in order to relate to contemporary art a certain level of foreknowledge is required. It becomes problematic because of it's associations with feminism though and I wonder what your motivations for doing this are beyond it being associated with your own gender? Foucault will undoubtably be invaluable for you to look at with regards to power structures and systems of knowledge within institutions. Books that explore taxonomy within museum displays would be good for you to look at too, museology seems to be a recurring theme within your work, there are loads of books in the library along these lines.
